The science behind bipolar ionization  

Airborne pathogens in offices can be significantly reduced by using effective air purification systems, according to a new independent report from the University of Lincoln.

This important study reveals that the levels of airborne micro-organisms can be cut by around half with an effective air purification system.

The illuminating investigation was financed by The Productivity Programme for Greater Lincolnshire, a European Regional Development funding initiative. Air treated by purification system was tested twice a day over a 22-day period.

The report concluded that there was an “overall reduction seen in bacterial and fungal counts as a function of air handling” and “this has led to an overall reduction seen in bacterial/fungal counts taken from an office environment”.

Good ventilation reduces the concentration of pathogens in the air and therefore cuts the risk posed by airborne transmission.

This happens when people breathe in small particles (aerosols) that can be present in the air after someone with a virus has occupied an enclosed area. During the cold winter months, providing adequate ventilation can pose challenges in keeping employees warm. Using an effective air purification system can help provide clean air without the cold.

But, as well as ventilating occupied spaces, there are also other things that can be done to reduce the risk of airborne pathogens, as the Lincoln University research shows.

How can air in buildings be cleaned?

There are several ways to clean the air in buildings. These include the use of ultraviolet light to kill or deactivate micro-organisms by disrupting their DNA or employing filter air cleaners to remove particles from the air.

However, arguably the best way to treat air to remove potentially dangerous viruses and bacteria is by using bipolar ionization technology of the kind supplied by Klima-Therm.
